Acne Treatment Reviews | Chocolate

Chocolate has been blamed for years as a cause of acne.  Whether or not there is any merit to the belief is a matter of debate. According to many skin care specialists and dermatologists, acne is not caused nor made worse by what you eat, including chocolate, french fries and candy.  In fact, there is good news, chocolate contains flavenoids, which have been shown to have many health benefits including helping keep our arteries clean (1). However, there is growing evidence that your diet might play some role in the development of acne.  This evidence does not exclusively point to chocolate as being a problem, but more generally to high carbohydrate and high sugar diets.

Dr. Perricone has done much research on this hypothesis, and believes that a diet that causes spikes in blood sugar levels can be blamed for inflammation and subsequently skin conditions like acne (2). “A large body of evidence now exists showing how diet may directly or indirectly influence the following 5 proximate causes of acne: (1) increased proliferation of basal keratinocytes within the pilosebaceous duct, (2) incomplete separation of ductal corneocytes from one another via impairment of apoptosis and subsequent obstruction of the pilosebaceous duct, (3) androgen-mediated increases in sebum production, (4) colonization of the comedo by Propionibacterium acnes, and (5) inflammation both within and adjacent to the comedo.”(3) Please click here to read the entire study.
Because we feel there is not entirely conclusive evidence on either side of the argument, and for general health reasons, we recommend that you stick to a balanced diet that does not include too much suger or carbohydrates but does include a lot of vegetables, fiber and lean protein.
